Mega trends - global and national trends affecting regional prospects
July 2011
Infometrics has produced a report on regional Mega Trends to assist local authorities with their long-term planning. The report identifies ten major global and national trends that are likely to influence regional prospects over the next 10 – 15 years, covering economic, demographic, societal, environmental, technological and political dimensions. The Mega Trends report differs from other publications covering big global trends in that it has a regional focus. For each trend the report discusses the ways it will affect industries and regions and possible local policy implications.
1000 days to get it right for every child - the effectiveness of public investment in New Zealand children
July 2011
Every Child Counts commissioned David Grimmond to prepare the report: 1000 days to get it right for every child - the effectiveness of public investment in New Zealand children. Although the majority of New Zealand children are well supported by their families, their communities, and by government services, there is also a significant subset of children who miss out on this support. The consequences for these children in terms of personal prospects are severely compromised by a lack of support, particularly in the very early years. Support for these children, and their families, in the early years of life represents a cost effective social investment, as it will address issues before they become serious problems. The counterfactual is that the lack of support feeds through into poorer health outcomes, poorer education and consequent labour market outcomes, delinquency and later criminal behaviour, and other factors that inhibit social integration. In addition to the impact this has on the affected individuals and their families, these consequences also impose a significant financial burden on the rest of society. International evidence suggests that the consequences of poor child outcomes could impose an annual economic burden on society in the order of 3% of GDP.
