Regional forecasts

Infometrics’ regional forecasting framework provides five year forecasts of GDP and employment by 29 industries for each region. The method uses a mix of principal component and regression techniques to link macroeconomic key indicators (eg inflation, interest rates, unemployment, the exchange rate, business profitability etc) to prospects for individual industries and regions. Our forecasts for all regions in the country are conducted simultaneously which ensures our regional forecasts are realistic and consistent with the constraints of the national economy.

The forecasts can be customised to meet the specific requirements of your organisation. This might include the monitoring and forecasting of specific industries or territorial authorities and/or the production of customised reports. For more information on regional forecasts and services please contact Andrew Whiteford at andreww@infometrics.co.nz.

Regional Data Service

Infometrics’ Regional Data Service provides indicators of economic, labour market, building and demography for all regions (16) and territorial authorities (73) in New Zealand. Infometrics have drawn together numerous sources of regional information into a single database, including our own measures of regional GDP and employment. The Regional Data Service will reduce the time you spend gathering data and give you more time to consider what the data means for your region.

At the core of the regional data service is Infometrics’ measures of employment and GDP. Our Regional Industry Employment Model provides a quarterly measure of employment in 470 industries in each territorial authority and region. The model draws on the strengths of the all the major data sources including Business Demography, LEED, Quarterly Employment Survey and the Population Census. Our method to estimate regional GDP is the most rigorous in the market and draws on our Regional Industry Employment Model as well as numerous other sources. Estimates are updated each quarter following the release of SNZ national employment and GDP statistics.
