Regional Economic Profile (REP)

Release date: 31 January 2019

Infometrics Regional Economic Profiles will be updated with 2018 data on 31 January 2019. Data for small area profiles will be updated on 22 February 2019.

Fortunately our economic profiles are largely unaffected by Statistics New Zealand’s delays with the release of Census 2018 data. Our industry GDP, employment, and business insights are largely driven by tax and business records that are independent of the Census. We will keep you informed about the availability of Census data in April once Statistics NZ has provided more information.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this update, please get in touch with Benje Patterson.

Sector Profiles

Release Date: 31 January 2019

Infometrics Sector Profiles will be updated with 2018 data on 31 January 2019.

As we have outlined to clients, from 31 January to 15 February 2019, employment forecasts in the Sector Profiles will temporarily be unavailable as we update our employment forecasts.

This year the employment forecasts in the Sector Profiles will be extended out two years (to 2024) instead of the usual one year. We have made this change based on client feedback requesting additional forecast years to help inform decision making.

We had been hoping to update some aspects of the Sector Profiles with data from the 2018 Census early this year. Unfortunately, due to delays at Statistics NZ with the release of Census data, this will not be possible until the second half of 2019 at the earliest. We will keep you informed about the availability of Census data in April once Statistics NZ has provided more information.

We have also been working on refreshing the way we present some of data in the Sector Profiles. We will share these improvements with you on 15 February.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this update, please get in touch with Shaun Twaddle.

Building and Transport Forecasts

Release Date: 01 February 2019

Infometrics Building & Property Forecasts and Transport Forecasts will be updated on 01 February 2019.

Our forecasts show a slowdown in China and the US over the next two years, which will drag global economic growth lower. New Zealand’s growth is forecast to hold in the 2.5-3.0% range throughout 2019. However, flow-on effects from the global slowdown, combined with factors limiting domestic growth such as the tight labour market and a lack of business investment, are expected to drag GDP growth down to 2.0%pa by early 2021.

As a subscriber you will receive notification as soon as the forecasts have been released (on Friday).
If you have any questions or would like to discuss the forecasts, please get in touch with Gareth Kiernan.
