Newsletter - July 2022

There is no doubt that all Kiwis are feeling the effects of inflation and the increase in the cost of living. In this month's newsletter, we decided to look at the wider effects of rising costs on the economy and labour market.

Senior Economist Rob Heyes examines the effect of a higher cost of living on low income households. He hosted our monthly client webinar for July on the same topic. A recording of this webinar is available for clients here, and will be available to the public in a month's time.

Economist Joel Glynn examines whether the government's policy of reduced fuel tax is really providing assistance to the households that most need it.

Our latest round of forecasts have been released. Chief Forecaster Gareth Kiernan discusses that New Zealand will probably technically avoid a recession this year, thanks to the impending revival of the tourism sector, but conditions will feel more downbeat for most domestically focused businesses.

In our regular Chart of the Month, Senior Economist Nick Brunsdon looks at how changes in the population of children aged under 10 can give us insights into future demand for services around different parts of the country.

And finally we welcome a new member to the growing Infometrics team. Andreas Benz has joined us as a Software Developer, and we chat with him about what a day in his life is like.
